The Basics

- Cursing is fun and often fucktacularly splendid!: You may totally fucking curse all the fuck you desire; what the hell? We love that damn shit! Why the fuck not? You may not, however, say anything to deliberately hurt another player. We will not tolerate player-hating.
- Refrain from Twinking or "God Modding": Twinking is basically when you make your character ridiculously powerful. For example, your post may say "I shoot him with my pistol", but not "I shoot him until he is dead" or "I kill him" because there’s no guarantee they will die, especially with other players or plot-significant NPCs (Non-Player Characters).
- In your post, if you have an out-of-game comment, type "**NRPG**" (Not [related to the] RPG) and then your message. Other acceptable ways of saying this are **OOC** (Out of Character), **OCC** (Out of Character Context), or simply putting the text [[in double brackets]], or ((double parenthesis)), or **in between asterisks...** Or whatever, as long as its clear.
- Don't get too sexy... At least in public: flirting, kissing, full on making out, petting, and grinding are tolerated (and, admittedly kind of hot) If you believe that you are roleplaying something that might be considered too intimate, then kindly move it into private messages... After all, it might just very well be something that should be shared between individuals and not exploited (unless that's what you're into, in which case, you may need to look for another site, or consider an occupation in pornography; either way, in Roachia, please keep intercourse and over-erotic foreplay private).
- Smurfing is prohibited: "Smurfing" or pretending to be another player is punishable by immediate ban.
- Multi-Locational Posting: Posting in multiple places and making your character "appear to be in multiple places at once" is perfectly fine... But restrictions apply. See details in the description below.
- Player Vs. Player Combat: Coming Soon...
- Changing your Display Name is fine unless you want to roleplay in first-person (i.e. your posts say, "I do this" or "I do that"), in which case, your display name should match your character's name.
- Maintain a good sense of humor: If you can't accept burritos with magical powers, then choose not to associate with them or leave.
- If using a power/spell, please post in orange so that it's easier for the Narrators to discern when you are harnessing the power of the spirits. Narrators will decide if they are successful or not.
- Do not create multiple accounts.
- Glitch Abuse… It’s been used before… Glitches should be REPORTED using the “Glitch Report” board in the "Off Topic/Out of Character" section.
- If you are expecting narrative response from a Narrator, god, or goddess, and do not get a response within 48 hours, you may ask for it via PM.
- If you see something that someone has posted that conflicts with any of the rules, send a PM to one or several of the Narrators.
- Following the rules is pretty much mandatory.

Accessing your Private Messages:

On Roachia's homepage, at the bottom in the section labeled "Info Center". On the right hand side, it says: "Your Private Messages". Select the number of new messages, or the number of total messages and you will be linked directly to your Private Messages Inbox.

Make sure to refer to this page regularly. Especially if you are unsure of something included in your post.

Description:
Once you've registered, you'll be able to fully create your character(s) and live the life of a Roachian. "Roach Credits", commonly identified as "RC", have previously been used to purchase in-game objects such as weapons to help fight off enemies (real person or non-player character). However, the value of Roach Credits is currently nil.

This page may be updated when we feel it needs to be.

Freeform Vs. Narrative Style Roleplaying:
Roachia is proud to be, quite possibly, one of the only Narrative Freeform roleplaying games on the internet. So, for clarification, let's just explain some of the differences. In a Pure Narrative roleplaying game, anything at all you do must be verified by a Narrator, and you're much more limited. Example:

You: Helen tries to pick up the marble.
Narrator: Helen is successful.

Of course, you really don't have to worry too much about this unless you're roleplaying a major or sub-plotline, as you'll soon discover. In contrast, a freeform roleplaying game would let you be much more liberated, and allow you to do more of what you wanted, so your character can have more of their own plotlines. Example:

You: Jim picks up the marble and tosses it from one hand to the other, a smile on his face. I did it, he thinks. I picked up the marble! Jim had never picked up a marble in his life, and considered this a great accomplishment.

We mentioned earlier that we're a blend of the two roleplaying styles. For more information on how we incorporate Narrators, see the plots section of the Player's Guide.

In Roachia, sometimes certain places are freeform, which means, basically, that major plotlines do not affect them. To identify a places like this, make note of the thread title, if it says {freeform} in it, then it's freeform (note that these places are prone to change at any moment; be sure to keep an eye on that) So, thinking you can get away with anything you want in freeform? Think again. Good freeforms are just as structured as narrative RPGs. Every freeform is different; so, I'll take the liberty to explain Roachia's rules for freeform:

  1. Follow the basics, explained in the first section. This includes the parts about:
  2. No twinking
  3. No exploiting loopholes
  4. Post anything you do with your powers in orange so that the Narrators know when you're using them. You still need Narrative Input to determine the effectiveness of the power-- freeform or not.

Narrators are still Administrative Figures in freeform areas.

Another thing to note: the term "pure freeform", around here, has come to mean that you may godmod, twink, and do whatever you want. That's why there's only one place that you may experience the chaos of pure freeform. In the Misc. Roleplaying section: Freeform Village.

If you have questions, PM one or several of the Narrators. And PLEASE do not try exploiting some loopholes instead. We will give you a warning for that.

Posting:
Your first post can be anywhere at all on in Roachia. Just feel free to pick some place (e.g. the tavern, the bank, etc.) and post anything from: "I walk in" to "I walk in after having traveled a long time....". You can tell us how you got here, or just appear.

Posting can be in first person, third person, or even second person if you so desire. You can write it straight out, or you can do it poetically as long as it is understandable. Please keep it in English.

Do not make "if..then" posts. For example, don't make a post that says "if Sally says yes: Sue hung her head, slightly depressed. If Sally says no: Sue smiled and gave her sister a hug."

This sort of defeats the purpose of the roleplay. Consider a real life situation. You might think in advance what you might or might not do if someone reacts differently. But the other person doesn't know whats on your mind (unless they are telepathic). So if you outline every action your character will take dependent on the actions of another, you are basically making it very easy for them to "take advantage of" your character. The other thing is that you might leave out an unanticipated action. Maybe Sally says "maybe, I'll think about it." Sue does not have a response for this.

Feel free to add little tid-bits like a slight wind blowing if you’re outside, or the smell of water. You may also have your character talk to NPCs. Just casual talk, if its something involving a plot, then make sure a Narrator or deity is narrating for the NPC. You CAN narrate for public workers like waiters in a restaurant or bankers in the bank and shouldn't always expect narrators to respond for them (unless it's plot-relative).

Sample Roleplay:
(This is perfectly acceptable)

“Jay sat at the table and greeted the waiter when the tray arrived. He smiled and thanked him, he ate slowly. Fried rice and a soft drink. Across from him sat Jack Smith, the two were engaged in a conversation on the lack of cockroaches in the city of Roachia. Smith made the point on how it might have been the pesticides the government was spreading. Jay had mentioned that he thought the situation was uncool several times throughout. After the meal was depleted, Jay left a tip of 27 RC for the waiter and bid Jack farewell before he left the restaurant.”

Plots:
Narrators post major plotline-related scenarios in yellow. When roleplaying a plot, or part of one, the posting rules change a bit, because you can't "self-narrate"... For example:

Post by Jill Random:
Jill walks into the room and looks around.

Narrator:
A small orb glows brightly in the center of the room.

Jill:
Jill walks up to the orb and touches it.

Narrator:
The orb feels warm to the touch.

Subplots, usually run by player deities are posted in BLUE. Everything else, including a player's own personal plot, is posted normally. This should make distinguishing plot from regular roleplay easier. Players who have their own plots (i.e. their brother was murdered they set off to find the killer) do not narrate. They are to act exactly as a player who has no plot(s) of their own. You are not obliged to participate in major plots, sub-plots, or player-plots. However, if you do begin to involve yourself in a plot, it may draw you in intentionally.

Multi-Locational Posting:
Sometimes referred to as "Liquid Time"; posting in multiple locations at the same time is legal, but within reason. Meaning…

You’re posting in multiple places at once, but in the RPG, its considered to be different times of the same day. Therefore, if you die in one of them, you must roleplay yourself leaving all the others soon, and not returning. In essence, you’re slowly phasing your character away before they die later on that day. Of course, you can quickly return as your reincarnated character. Also, if you gain an item while in one place, you can’t use it in another that you’ve been roleplaying in at the same time, as you wouldn’t have had it yet then. But you will be able to use it later, for example, after you leave the place; as long as you aren’t roleplaying in too many separate places, the next place you’d chronologically be would be where you get the item. Therefore, it is suggested that you stick to only two or three places at once. Finally, Your character should never, ever see themselves unless a Narrator makes this so.

Gaining Levels:
You gradually gain levels when you post. Each post counts toward your level... Meaning the more you post the higher your level becomes.
Higher levels are able to fight stronger enemies, do harder things, and find themselves in more complex situations.

**Remember, don't post lots and lots of unnecessary posts just to gain levels, YOU WILL BE BANNED!!**
Levels apply if you join an organization, such as The Order of The Eastern Sky or The Dark Horses, however you won't be able to see your level, so be sure to check the player's guide and compare your post count to the table of level graduations above to make sure you know what your level is.
Special Abilities: There are some abilities you can't put in for request but can still be gained by doing special in-game tasks. The list of these abilities is currently under construction, so please check back soon.

Types of Levels

Standard Level: This is the level as appears beneath your display name and corresponds to the number of your posts as shown in the table of level graduations. This level also has a direct correspondence with lethal combat.

Immortality Level:
There are three levels of immortality:

Level 1 - Not Immortal: can be harmed by all levels
Level 2 - Semi-Immortal: can be harmed by levels 2 and 3
Level 3 - Immortal: can be harmed only by other level 3s

Reincarnation and Karma:
If one of your characters dies, your character information will change, and you will have a new person. Remember that you can change your character information (I.E.: Name, Sex, Race, etc.) at the Offices of Roachian Administration.

Karma is given by players to players. If a player finds another player's posts interesting, or is in awe of this player she or he may give a single karma point to this player by pressing the "exalt" button under their user name. Pressing the "smite" button takes away a karma point. You may only exalt or smite a person once every hour.

The more karma points you have when you reincarnate, the better your character will become. Likewise, if you have lower karma, your character may not return as good.

If you kill a player-character, you will lose as many karma points as your victim's level.

Levels do transfer from life to life, as well as moderator + status, however RC and inventory do not.

The 'hood of the Moderators:
After playing a long time and following the rules, you may be granted optional membership into the 'hood of moderators.

Global Moderators can ban members, however they MUST inform the Narrators of who they banned and why.

If you want to became a deity, you have to become a god or a goddess, and you can do this by application... Though, being a moderator for a while may help.

If you do not have 1000 posts or you have not been invited to become a moderator, you can still become a moderator via application:

PM the following to all Narrators if you are interested in becoming a moderator:

Username (not character's name, but what you use to log on with):
Why do you want to be a mod?:
What would you do as a mod?:

Goddesses and Gods:
These are the more advanced moderators who may have their own major subplots. Narrators are usually chosen from these members.

Narrators:
Narrators control the major plot lines and the big stories of Roachia from kidnappings to alien invasions and beyond. The only way to become a Narrator is to be asked by The Roachy Jay herself (DON'T ASK HER!). Players who are not classified as narrators (via user group) are not allowed to narrate. It's as simple as that. If you are subject to confusion about this rule, please PM one of the Narrators. Narrators may also roleplay but are to rarely intercept with major plot lines.

If a moderator, deity, or Narrator bans you and you do not believe you have done anything severe enough to deserve such punishment, send an email to any of the Narrators and explain your side of the story! If they decide that a ban wasn't necessary, they may lift it, and consequences on the one who banned you may contain disciplinary action.

**Remember: Narrators can appeal all bans!**

Organizations

People of No Souls:
The People with No Souls are those who post without sending in Bios, they may have no inventory, and no gender, nor a name... Just an alias; what they call themselves.

The Order of The Eastern Sky
The Order of The Eastern Sky is run by the water goddess, Yaellka... Who is also known as the twins Kieko and Lola Jueling of Chinatown. The members of this order have the ability to control water; and as it is co-owned by the god of time, Trijackha, members of this order may also find they have limited powers over time. One could join this order by speaking with Yaellka in her mansion in Chinatown, or Trijackha who is usually nearby. Members of this order have a direct portal to The Lake of Emjampai.
Powers: Water Manipulation, the ability to pull hydrogen and oxygen molecules together and create water out of thin air (meaning it does not work in the void of space), shape water as willed, generate ice or steam and Time Manipulation, the ability to travel back and forth through time for a certain distance depending on level (chart coming soon)

The Magma Guards
Started by The Goddess of Fire, Delajeth, and The God of Earth, the late Great Logan, The Magma Guards are a combined team of these two main elements. They are the the arch enemies of The Order of The Eastern Sky and have control over Earth and Fire. You might join them by speaking with Delajeth.
Power: Fire Manipulation, the ability to summon collective heat and create fire (also does not work in the void of space), control fire as willed, create smoke from thin air.

The Hegemony of Vindication
The Hegemony of Vindication, lead by The Dude, who considers himself The Hegemon. "The Hegemon" found that with extreme concentration, he could manipulate light and darkness, though he is a mere mortal. Seek user 'thedude' if you are interested in powers of dark and light.
Power: Light & Dark Energy, pulling together light and/or darnkness from where it lurks and manipulating it. This does work in the void of space.

The Protectors
The Protectors are an organization founded by Von Hulle, Tony Rigatoni and Drake Magnus. While the exact purpose it serves is unknown, members have the ability to resist external forces causing them to shapeshift while they are alive.
Power: Solid Form Retainability, allowing the user to resist external causes for shapeshifting while alive.

The Enlightened
There are two main ways to become enlightened. One is by pledging your soul to Jemhoja, bringing your mind into obscurity. The other is to simply hold chopsticks with your chin and eat the broth of soup. The Enlightened are as nearly as strong as deities and cannot be harmed except by few. In fact, the only ones said to be able to destroy an enlightened one are in fact the four who probably wouldn't bother bothering them: The Roachy Jay, Ehlowel, Lord Outrrrageous, and Jemhoja... Oh, and one other. A woman named Helen Crow.
Power: Can enter Nirvana... Other benefits are hinted but no one has as of yet grasped them fully.

The Dark Horses
An underground anarchist group formerly led by ex-Roachian President Wendy MacGyver to agitate those that disagree with her.
Powers: Flight, Invisibility, Telepathy...

UNDEAD
You do not want to be undead. In fact, if you tried making an undead character, it wouldn't happen. The undead consist only of long term inactive players. The original user who created the account is not the one controlling it. The account would be given to another designated player who is sworn into secrecy and will not, ever, admit they are the soulkeeper.
Powers: Harassing the Active Members...

~

Return after being banned:
Players who have been banned, but wish to return: send an email to jismail@theroachyjay.tk and, depending on why you have been banned in the first place, you may be granted a "second chance".

However, all "second chancers" will be under probation and may not be re-granted the membership immediately. A delay of a day to a month may take place before their return may be granted.
